If you are considering an electric car, there are a lot of different factors for you to consider. Electric cars are becoming more and more popular, making them more available due to grants and schemes being currently offered. Because of this, there is no better time to invest in an electric car!
Should I consider an electric car?
As great as electric cars are, they are simply not right for everyone. If the following apply to you, then an electric car is great:
- You drive less than 250 miles a week
- You have a driveway, garage or another form of private parking available to you
- You want to help the environment by lowering carbon emissions
- You live or drive in an area with a Low Emissions Charge
Even if you do not live in a low emissions zone then an electric car is still a good idea, but it can save you from paying some of the inner city driving taxes that aim to cut down on carbon emissions.
Technology in electric vehicles is constantly evolving, so don’t worry if they aren’t suitable for you just yet! Keep your eye out for up-coming models and see how they might suit you better.
What if you don’t have private parking?
If you don’t have a private place to park and charge your car each night, then this is not the end of the world. While home chargers are much more practical and convenient, we know that not everyone has access to suitable parking. If this is the case, you can still have an electric car, but you will need to think carefully about where and when you will charge it. For example, a lot of supermarkets and petrol stations now have charging points that you can plug into and go about your day. It is also a good idea to find charging points around your workplace, so you can get a full charge without causing disruption to your day.
However, public chargers can often be more expensive, so make sure you are looking for deals, for example chargers that offer savings during ‘off-peak’ times. You also need to consider when these chargers will be busy, as you do not want to be low on battery and notice a big queue at your regular charging spot.
Things to consider with an electric car
If an electric car is suited to your lifestyle, there are a few other things to consider before you make the switch.
Firstly, you needed to have money available to make the initial investment. Electric cars are often priced higher than similar cars that run off regular fuel, so this needs to be something to think about. However, electric cars cost more as you will be saving money on fuel and road tax during the lifetime of your car!
You also need to think about where you will charge your car. Having private parking means you can invest in a home charging point, which will make your daily life much easier! However, if you do end up going for a long journey, you need to factor in any additional charges that may be required. It is a good idea to check out places local to you that offer electric charging, such as a nearby supermarket or a car park in/near your work place.
